On 15 June 2016 Rachel Anderson, Chair of NIRIG and Maf Smith, Deputy Chief Executive of Renewables UK, gave oral evidence to the Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee inquiry into the electricity sector in Northern Ireland. During the session members of the Committee heard evidence about some of the challenges facing the renewables industry in Northern Ireland following the closure of NIRO, with no current route to marketĀ  for any form of renewables, whether that is renewable electricity through the NIRO or renewable heat through the Renewable Heat Incentive. NIRIG drew attention to the fact that Northern Ireland will beĀ  generation deficit by 2021 and that new opportunities to exploit our indigenous renewable sources could be lost without a comprehensive government energy framework to support further expansion.
